Designed and to be Built From the Ground Up

Three designs, out of a group of five prospects, were conceived more or less at the same time yet developed in the order presented in the Options MATRIX: Pavilion One, EarthWorks and Inside.

As I proceeded, after the designs were initially drawn, I worked back and forth among them taking the best features from each and incorporating them into the others. All three of these buildings share the same architectural grammar and materials and methods of construction. Each is different in size, complexity to build, site location, orientation and how the functions are weighted and served.

The following is a brief narrative with screen shots from the 3d Model of the EARTHWORKS design. The latest SketchUp Model of this work can be down loaded by clicking on the graphic below:
This document was posted April 5, 2009 and will take several days to reach a basic level of completion along with its companion pages on Pavilion and Inside. Check often to see the final Preliminary development of these design take place.

Note: as the 3d Models are brought up to date the graphics below will be updated with color, furniture, details and planting

The Site
EARTHWORKS sits on the SouthWest corner of a 164 foot square Commons with the Palomares House atthe Northwest. The dotted line on the drawing, is the river setback to which the existing house is built. The space between the two buildings “reads” as an intimate green Commons to be employed for a variety of recreational and adventure education purposes. The low profile and earth berms of EarthWorks creates an intimate relationship with the house. A path from the front of the house will enter directly into the Garden Area of the CyberCafe and another from the house’s side will turn and enter at the Terrace in front of the Radiant Room. These walks form the square which is interrupted at a variety of places. The two buildings are 76 feet apart on the diagonal. Design issues are how to consolidate parking for both facilities, create walk-able distances in all weather conditions, and what is the best use of the Commons between them. The two building’s shape and mass, and distance, creates their relationship which can be anything from a distant one to intimate. My premise, with the EarthWorks design, is that an intimate connection is desired. The old property line, which runs through the Entry of earthWorks, is the existing tree line which the building will penetrate accessing the parking areas.

Entry
EarthWorks, which is diagonally aligned with the the Palomares House, main Entries are from the back at into the CyberCafe and out the front to the Parking Area beyond the tree line. The trade-off here is to prevent the parking from impinging upon the buildings, and their immediate landscape, while not making the walk from and to parking too long. The parking itself will be built, in four 25 car sements of 100 foot footprints, with generous landscaping inside and around the parking areas. These areas will employ a “growing” base to reduce runoff and heat gain. As distinct from Pavilion and Inside which have their earth berms wrapped tightly around their outer walls, EarthWorks has only two smallerr sections which folows the main building. The majority of EarthWorks berms protect Southwest facing courtyards so that low winter sun can warm these semi enclosed areas extending their Spring and Fall use. This is an old Roman trick which can be seen throughout the Mediterranean, Spain and England - they control the sun exposure, trap the heat in a thermal mass and protect the area from wind. This use of the berms creates a double entry process. You move from landscape, through the walls and berms, into a hall or courtyard and then, (in some cases through interior landscaping) into the work areas themselves.

The Main Room
The Main Room of INSIDE is 48 by 48 space dedicated to collaborative design and interactive experiential learning. It houses a round Radiant Room in its center.

Leadership Team Offices
Of the three designs, EARTHWORKS has the most generous and flexible Leadership Team office facilities and collaborative work space. This may not be a luxury as the level of innovation go up and the number, scale and scope of learning programs grows to meet future requirements.

Structure and Building Materials
The structure of EarthWorks is a lightweight steel truss system which rests on ten concrete columns. The pre cast concrete walls will come finished and will remain as pored. The steel will be painted. The concrete floors will be pored in place with integral color. Some wood flooring will be used in the Radiant Room and carpeting in the Leadership Team Office. This is an environment of simple, basic materials, put together very well and exposed to express their function and nature. The AI WorkFurniture will introduce woods and textures. The use of glass in EarthWorks is extensive; in amount less than pavilion and much more than Inside. This panel, glass wall system is different than that employed in Pavilion or Inside. The panel system is designed to be switched as required. A 4 foot panel can be a solid, insulated wall panel, a door, fixed glass, or folding partitions. In some places, the steel posts placed on four foot centers will be designed to be removed so that double doors or folding door-partitions can be inserted. This way the basic configuration of the building can be changed from time to time as required. This will also facilitated expansion of the building and re-use changes if ever required.
